Mercy (Merhamet) - Stephan Dunn
The music was fidgety, arch, (10)
an orchestral version of twang. (9)
Welcome to atonal hell, (9)
welcome to the execution (10)
of a theory, I kept thinking, (3)
thinking, thinking. I hadn't felt (2)
a thing. Was it old fashioned (6)
of me to want to? Or were feelings, (7)
as usual, part of the problem? (8)
The conductor seemed to flail (10)
more than lead, his baton evidence (10)
of something unresolved, (10)
perhaps recent trouble at home. (10)
And though I liked the cellist— (9)
especially the way (10)
she held her instrument— (9)
unless you had a taste (10)
for unhappiness (10)
you didn't want to look (5)
at the first violinists face. (9)
My wife whispered to me (10)
This music is better than it sounds. (10)
I reminded myself the world outside (10)
might be a worse place (4)
than where I was now, (3)
though that seemed little reason (8)
to take heart. Instead (10)
I closed my eyes, thought about (7)
a certain mezzo soprano (7)
who could gladden a sad day (9)
anywhere, but one January night (5)
in Milan went a full octave (6)
into the beyond. Sometimes escape (3)
can be an art, or a selfishness, (4)
or just a gift you need (6)
to give yourself. Whichever, (8)
I disappeared for a while, (8)
left my body behind to sit there, nod, (9)
applaud a the appropriate time. (10)
