A struggling team aren’t going to be transformed overnight and one of the points that Advocaat made early on to his players was that there would be a setback along the way — he was right, too; Sunderland lost 4-1 at home against Crystal Palace in his third game.
“I pointed that out to the players; if you play five games, you can lose a game, but keep believing in yourself. You have a vision and if you can bring that over to your players… if they start believing in you, that’s the most important thing. Sometimes they asked me, ‘Where’s the quality?’ I said, ‘The quality is in the dressing room — because I’m there!’”
Advocaat had the presence, charisma and motivational tools to get the best out of the players. Defoe talks about how cool and calm Advocaat was in a team meeting before Sunderland played Arsenal away, in their penultimate match of the season, when a goalless draw secured their survival. “I can remember that,” Advocaat says. “We had two final games that were Arsenal away and Chelsea away, and we still needed one point. There (in the meeting) you can do two things: be nervous, or try to be relaxed to help your players.”
